Eurovision news is coming in thick and fast now and it seems representatives and songs are being announced in a rush. This time around we are talking about Portugal’s representative Conan Osíris, who will sing “Telemóveis” on the Eurovision 2019 stage in Tel Aviv, Isreal, after winning their national selection show, Festival da Canção.

The national selection show had two Semi-Finals which took place at RTP’s studios in Lisbon on 16 February 2019 and 23 February 2019. The Final took place at the Portimão Arena in Portimão, Portugal, on 2 March 2019. It was hosted by Filomena Cautela and Vasco Palmeirim.

Conan Osíris with “Telemóveis” topped both the jury vote and the televote, becoming a clear winner out of all the competitors. In second place was NBC with “Igual a ti” who came second in the jury vote gaining 10 points, and third in the televote gaining 8 points. Third place went to Matay with “Perfeito” who came joint-fourth in the jury vote gaining 7 points, and came second in the televote gaining 10 points.

The winner’s real name is Tiago Miranda and has been a professional singer-songwriter in Portugal since 2011. His stage name comes from the ancient Egyptian god Osiris and Hayao Miyazaki’s Japanese series Future Boy Conan. He has previously released two EPs and two studio albums; while his Eurovision song, surprisingly, acts as his debut single release.

Portugal won the Eurovision Song Contest, for the first time, in 2017, after competing for over 50 years, with Salvador Sobral’s “Amar pelos dois”. They’ve always sung in their own language of Portuguese and hosted the show for the first time, last year. The country came last in the competition that year too, so they’re hoping to do better this year.
