A missing child set off a panic. The little boy’s name is Jimmy. He was walking to school with his mom when he said that other kids get to walk by themselves and he convinced his mother to let him walk the rest of the way alone. She had just turned her back when she heard a pop. Like a gunshot or a car backfiring. His mother turned around and she still saw Jimmy walking just fine. She, therefore, was walking away again when she heard the scream. It sounded like her son. She pursued it and her son had disappeared. He was no longer on the sidewalk where his mother last spotted him. He was just gone.
The mother had received a cryptic text the night before. It basically told her to be on guard and she thought it was a wrong number. Once her son had been taken, she realized the text was something more. Danny and Baez were on the case. They traced the text back to Jimmy’s biological mother. It turns out Jimmy was adopted by a wonderful couple. His adopted father died a few years back. His adopted mother has been doing the best she could on her own. The text from the bio mother on the other hand came out of the blue. Danny and Baez went to this woman’s home. They questioned her about why she would threaten Jimmy’s new mother.
The bio mother claimed she didn’t threaten anyone. She just wanted Jimmy’s parents that his bio dad had gotten out of prison. The bio parents had apparently fought over custody when the father went to jail on a drug charge. The bio mother got full custody of Jimmy. She used that to place him up for adoption and that was it for many years. The bio mother never reached out. She still received updated photos of Jimmy and so she showed her ex a photo of their son after he came out demanding answers. The photo she showed had the boy’s school uniform in it. From there, the bio dad had tracked down Jimmy.
Danny and Baez were doing their best to find the little boy. They asked the bio mom if she knew where her ex was and she didn’t. Things between her and Tommy didn’t end well. The detectives next spoke with Tommy. They found him checking in with his parole officer. The parole officer had sworn up and down that Tommy had nothing to do with this. She said he was a good guy that got a judge who wanted to make a point. But the detectives spoke with the bio dad. He had a solid alibi and he said he just found out – from them – that his son was missing. Tommy claimed he wanted his son found safe and unharmed only he was lying.
Someone sent a photo of Jimmy to his adopted mother. They took Jimmy out for ice cream. Behind the photo, there was a quick note saying Jimmy was fine. The detectives felt they should have questioned Tommy harder and so they went back to see him. Only he wasn’t home. He also wasn’t with his elderly father because, according to the father, Tommy already stopped by with Jimmy. He wanted to introduce Jimmy to his grandfather. He also wanted to take Jimmy on the carousel ride. The detectives later found the two at the rides. Jimmy was fine. He even cried as he was saying goodbye to Tommy.
But across town, Jamie was dealing with an issue. Jamie spotted a sergeant assaulting a fellow cop and he doesn’t know what to do about it. He wanted to report it. Eddie talked him out of it. She said that they didn’t have friends at the station and that’s because Jamie is such a stickler for the rules. Jamie thought about it. He realized that he didn’t want to lose a good cop or risk cutting a single mother off of her pension and so he partnered up the victim and his assaulter. Jamie forced them to work together and it seemed like a good idea because no one was happy. And so Jamie was in turn happy about that.
Erin meanwhile met up with a guy at her 20th college reunion. He was a defense attorney and he claimed there was a wrongfully convicted. Erin looked into the case. She was able to determine that the guy behind bars was guilty. Maybe not of murder, but of plenty of other things. So Erin left him behind bars.
And Frank was asked to do away with the age limit when a hero Marine asked to join the police force, but Frank turned him down. Not all Marines make good cops.
